Sports Minute: Timbers shopping Kenny Cooper and new Choppin’ Wood
Tuesday, July 19th, 2011The Timbers may trade Kenny Cooper. I’m not happy with this talk. Yes, he’s trade bait and yes, he’s a good chunk of our money and no, he’s not been scoring goals. He’s still a big target whose presence leaves holes for our little guys to get through; goals or no goals he changes the way the defense plays us. Similarly, the idea of trading for a ’star’ defender isn’t a move I like. System in the back, ‘faces’ in the front makes a deal of sense to me. Last, we’re a young team and Kenny Cooper for the next few years is better to me than a few hoped-for Ws by the end of this season.
In short, hopefully all this talk is just to get discussion started, feel out other teams’ roster commitments, and put a fire under KC.
